Chinese President Xi Jinping urged BRICS members to align with the rise of the Global South and boost their influence in global governance. Addressing the 16th BRICS Summit on Wednesday, Xi called for expanding membership and strengthening partnerships with developing countries.
He emphasized BRICS’ role in fostering peace, urging members to avoid provoking conflict and to help de-escalate the Ukraine crisis. Additionally, Xi stressed the importance of innovation, sustainable development, and reforming the global governance system to ensure fairness and equity.
Xi highlighted the tangible achievements of BRICS, such as the New Development Bank’s contribution to infrastructure in developing countries. He also announced China’s initiative to establish 10 overseas learning centers to train 1,000 education professionals from BRICS nations.
Experts noted BRICS’ distinct role in uniting the Global South, providing an alternative to Western-dominated global frameworks. They praised BRICS’ practical approach, including initiatives like the BRICS Partnership on New Industrial Revolution Innovation Center, which have delivered significant results in policy and project development.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty expressed confidence in BRICS as a voice for the Global South, opposing Western-led political polarization and emphasizing the need for consensus on global challenges.
