Chinese President Xi Jinping has reiterated China’s claim over Taiwan, labelling its “restoration” as an “unstoppable” outcome of World War II.
In a May 7 article published in Russia’s state-run Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Xi stated: “Taiwan’s restoration to China is a victorious outcome of WWII and an integral part of the postwar international order.”
Xi emphasised that international agreements, including the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, affirm China’s sovereignty over Taiwan. “No matter how the situation on the Taiwan island evolves… the historical trend toward China’s ultimate and inevitable reunification is unstoppable,” Xi wrote.
Xi’s remarks coincide with his state visit to Russia, where he is attending the May 9 Victory Day parade in Moscow, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany. During his visit, Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin have strengthened their strategic partnership, signing agreements to deepen cooperation in sectors such as energy, agriculture, and technology.
The visit occurs amid heightened tensions in Eastern Europe. Despite Russia’s announcement of a 72-hour ceasefire for Victory Day, Ukraine reported over 700 violations, with continued Russian attacks causing civilian casualties.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, marking the same anniversary in Taipei, warned against military aggression, stating, “Peace is priceless, and war has no winners”.
Xi’s assertions and his presence in Moscow underscore China’s support for Russia amid ongoing global tensions.
