On Monday, 22 July 2024, a hit-and-run incident in Kolovai injured a 19-year-old male who succumbed to his injuries on 23 July 2024. The incident was reported to the Nukunuku Police Station by a passerby who found the victim on the roadside between ‘Atatā Si’i and Fo’ui.
A 50-year-old male from ‘Ahau has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody as investigations continue. This tragedy marks the fourth road death in Tonga this year.
In a separate incident on 23 July 2024, a collision occurred on Taufa’ahau Road at Haveluloto at approximately 12:55 AM. A 21-year-old male from Havelu was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The other driver, a 46-year-old male from ‘Utulau, sustained a right leg fracture and is receiving treatment at Vaiola Hospital. Police are continuing their investigation into this incident.
