A three-day Youth Capacity Building Workshop on Renewable Energy and Climate Finance concluded in Nuku’alofa, with over 80 youth representatives from various communities participating. The workshop, organized by the Department of Climate Change and Department of Energy (MEIDECC), focused on climate action, renewable energy solutions, and climate finance opportunities.
Supported by key partners like the NDC Partnership, IRENA, SPC, GGGI, and CFAN, the event aimed to enhance youth involvement in Tonga’s climate goals. Director of Energy, Mrs. ‘Emeline Laumanu, highlighted the workshop’s importance, stating, “We are building a generation of leaders who will drive Tonga’s resilience and contribute to global climate goals.”
Participants engaged in group discussions and visited Tonga’s Popua Power Station to learn about renewable energy projects. The New Zealand High Commission’s Ms. Oliva Philpott urged youth to push policymakers toward inclusive, sustainable policies.
The workshop builds on the Youth Climate Change Talanoa series, empowering young Tongans to contribute to Tonga’s climate commitments, including its ambitious goal of 70% renewable energy by 2030. This event underscores Tonga’s dedication to empowering youth as climate-conscious leaders.
