Tropical Cyclone Rae has intensified into a Category 2 storm, prompting warnings across Tonga as authorities urge residents to prepare for heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding.
As of 6:00 AM this morning, Monday 24 February, the cyclone was located approximately 390 km west-southwest of Niuafo’ou and moving south-southwest at 16 km/h. Sustained winds near the center have reached 100-110 km/h, with gusts of up to 150 km/h. The system is expected to strengthen further into a Category 3 cyclone within 24 hours.
A tropical cyclone warning is in effect for Niuafo’ou and Niuatoputapu, while Vava’u and Ha’apai remain under cyclone alert. Authorities have issued heavy rain warnings, flash flood advisories, and gale warnings, particularly for the northern islands.
Residents are urged to secure homes, stock up on emergency supplies, and stay informed through official updates. Coastal areas are at risk of large swells, with small craft advisories in force.

The Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre continues to monitor the storm’s progression and warns that conditions may worsen as Cyclone Rae intensifies.
