The Pacific Media Assistance Scheme (PACMAS) announced that it will roll out its “Writing for Digital” training sessions for journalists and media professionals in Tonga starting this week.
These online sessions will focus on important skills for digital journalism, including mobile content and social media.
The program, led by PACMAS Digital Training Lead James Maasdorp from ABC News Digital, condenses a typically four-week course into two sessions over 2 weeks, each lasting two hours.
A similar digital training was conducted in Vanuatu last year highlighting the PACMAS program’s aim to support the development of a diverse and professional Pacific Islands media sector.

Kalafi Moala, President of the Pacific Islands News Association and former president of the Media Association of Tonga, described the initiative as a “good one” for journalists, emphasizing its relevance in today’s media landscape.
The course covers topics such news writing skills and also explores how stories appear on mobile platforms and strategies for producing diverse digital content.
PACMAS representative in Tonga, Taina Kami Enoka, encouraged local journalists to join the training.
Maasdorp and a team from PACMAS are expected to visit Tonga in February.
