Elon Musk’s Neuralink brain implant has received FDA approval for human trials. The coin-sized device is designed to be implanted in the skull using ultra-thin wires that connect directly into the brain. The first two applications in humans would be to attempt to restore vision and try to help people with little or no ability to operate their muscles rapidly use digital devices. Aside from medical uses, the Neuralink implant could one day be used to create half-human, half-robot cyborgs. In other words, Elon Musk wants to be able to surpass able-bodied human performance with their technology. A monkey with…

The Pasifika Safe Shelter Trust, a New Zealand charity, is seeking second-hand tractors to assist farmers in Tonga with tilling their ash-covered soil. Since the volcanic eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai last year, which resulted in extensive ash deposits on fields, the trust has sent several refurbished tractors to Tonga. According to Chairman Peter Rodwell, there remains a need for equipment to mix the volcanic ash into the soil, allowing crops to thrive. The ash is known to contain beneficial elements for agriculture. The charity is specifically looking for non-electronic tractors, particularly older models such as Massey Fergusons, as they…

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen revealed last Friday that lawmakers have a little over a week to hash out a debt ceiling deal before the federal agency runs out of funds and begins to default on financial obligations. Yellen explained that the federal government has a number of large payments coming up and the Treasury has already used some of its last remaining “extraordinary measures” to turn up funds to pay those bills. “[O]ur projected resources would be inadequate to satisfy all of these obligations,” she said. “If Congress fails to increase the debt limit, it would cause severe hardship…
In a dance studio nestled inside a building next to New York City Hall, Tamara Bejar Hernandez counts to the beat of a traditional Tahitian dance song as a group of ladies shake their hips from left to right and gracefully glide their hands up in the air and down their arms. “One, two, three,” Hernandez, founder of the Pacific Islander dance group Lei Pasifika, yells out. “Pretend you’re smelling flowers.” They are rehearsing choreography for the song “Te Pua No’a No’a,” which tells a story about the flowers spread throughout the island of Tahiti. It’s the same dance I…
Australia has joined the Five Eyes Security Alliance in condemning a recent cyber attack by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that has targeted critical infrastructure networks across the United States. The Five Eyes alliance—an intelligence alliance between the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand—also believes that the same techniques used by the CCP “could” be applied against other sectors worldwide.
