Tonga High School, in conjunction with the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC), hosted a tree planting program as part of its ongoing 75th-anniversary celebrations. The program, held on the school grounds, saw the Guest of Honor, Hon. Lupepau’u Tuita-Taione, plant a Heilala tree, symbolizing growth, resilience, and the enduring legacy of the school.
The event was graced by the presence of Hon. Lupepau’u Tuita-Taione, who emphasized the importance of nurturing the environment and building a sustainable future for Tonga.
Joining Hon. Lupepau’u Tuita-Taione were staff members from the Department of Climate Change, including the Acting Director, Ms. Nua Veilofia. Their participation in the tree planting program highlighted the collaborative effort between Tonga High School and MEIDECC’s Department of Climate Change in promoting environmental consciousness and achieving national targets.

To support the tree planting initiative and celebrate the 75th anniversary, the Department of Climate Change provided a total of 200 plants. This gesture not only contributes to the celebrations but also aligns with Tonga’s commitment to the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Target of planting 1 million trees by 2023. By actively participating in this program, Tonga High School and its stakeholders demonstrate their dedication to environmental sustainability and mitigating the effects of climate change.
The tree planting program at Tonga High School serves as a powerful symbol of unity and collective responsibility. It embodies the school’s commitment to instilling environmental values in its students and creating a greener, more sustainable future. By engaging in such initiatives, Tonga High School aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources and protecting the environment.
