Over 1,200 Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) workers from Pacific nations, including Tonga, have been immunised against measles in New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay in the last six months.
The vaccination drive, part of a nationwide initiative, aims to protect workers and their families from measles outbreaks.
“It’s incredibly important that we not only protect these workers and their families back home from another potential measles outbreak but also prevent an outbreak here in New Zealand too,” said Sipaia Kupa, Pacific Health Central Regional Director.
The initiative follows Samoa’s devastating 2019 outbreak, which claimed 83 lives, mostly young children.
“Measles is one of the most dangerous and contagious diseases. Vaccination is the best protection,” said Api Poutasi, Director of Pacific Public Health.
Clinics have been held in regions such as Bay of Plenty and Northland, with further sessions planned.
Over 2,400 RSE workers have been vaccinated so far, with efforts continuing into 2025.
