The Tropical disturbance (TD) 04F has been upgraded and named Tropical Cyclone Pita, now a Category 1 storm, and has prompted warnings for the Niua Islands, Vava‘u, and Ha‘apai, according to Tonga Meteorological Services.
As of 7:00 p.m. this evening, the system was located 115 km north-northeast of Neiafu, Vava‘u, with sustained winds of 60-70 km/h and gusts up to 90 km/h. Moving southeast at 40 km/h, the cyclone is bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gale-force winds to affected areas.

Forecasts for Saturday indicate continued challenging weather, with winds of 70-90 km/h persisting across the Niuas and Vava‘u, easing later in the day. Tongatapu and ‘Eua are expected to see lighter winds and scattered showers, clearing by the afternoon.
Residents are urged to remain cautious and monitor updates. Flooding in vulnerable areas is expected, and emergency services are on high alert.
