Dr. Saia Piukala, Director of WHO’s Western Pacific Regional Office, met with Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services to discuss regional healthcare advancements.
The courtesy visit focused on strengthening collaboration between the World Health Organization (WHO) and Fiji’s Ministry of Health. Discussions highlighted ongoing health initiatives, strategies for addressing pressing challenges, and long-term plans to enhance public health services.
Dr. Piukala emphasized WHO’s dedication to supporting Fiji in improving healthcare access and disease prevention efforts. “We remain committed to working alongside the Ministry of Health to ensure better health outcomes for all communities,” he stated.
The meeting also reaffirmed the importance of continued cooperation in tackling regional health issues, including non-communicable diseases and emergency preparedness. The Permanent Secretary echoed these sentiments, noting that partnerships with WHO play a vital role in strengthening Fiji’s healthcare system.
Dr. Piukala, a seasoned surgeon and public health leader from Tonga, brings nearly 30 years of experience to his role. In May 2019, he was appointed to the World Health Organization executive board.
