Tonga continued their impressive preparations for the Rugby World Cup with a 36-12 victory over Canada in Nuku’alofa on Tuesday.
The Tongans, who are in a tough Pool B with Ireland, South Africa, Scotland and Romania, scored six tries to two in the comprehensive win.
Sofeso Sakalia got the Tongans off to a perfect start with a try in the opening five minutes, and fullback Kyren Taumoefolau added a second before the break.
Vaea Fifita and Sakalia both scored their second tries in the second half, and Taumoefolau completed his brace with a late try.
Canada scored two consolation tries through Isaac Olson, but they were no match for the Tongans, who were dominant in all areas of the game.
The Tongans will now face a much sterner test against Ireland in their opening World Cup match on September 16, but they will be confident of causing an upset after their impressive performances in recent weeks.
Head coach Toutai Kefu said he was pleased with the way his team had performed, and he is confident they can make a big impact at the World Cup.
“We’re really happy with the way we’re going,” Kefu said. “We’ve got a tough pool, but we’re confident we can cause a few upsets.”
The Tongans are one of the most physical teams in world rugby, and they will be looking to use their power and athleticism to unsettle their opponents at the World Cup.
They also have a number of experienced players in their squad, including Taumoefolau, Fifita and former All Black Malakai Fekitoa, who will be key to their chances of success.
The Tongans will be hoping to make their mark at the World Cup and they will certainly be a team to watch in Pool B.
