The Government has given the green light to local network operators to start working on 5G technology. This move, led by the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC) is a big leap towards better telecommunications in Tonga.
The two major local networks, Tonga Communications Corporation and Digicel, can now start designing and testing the new 5G network, which is expected to bring faster and more reliable internet and phone connections. The allocated spectrum, focusing on bands n41 and n78 of the 5G NR bands, promises to revolutionise connectivity and enhance digital experiences. This move aligns with the government’s commitment to innovation and progress in the telecommunications sector.
The network operators will run testing over 6 months and report back to the MEIDECC on the technical features required for a successful 5G setup in Tonga. These include coverage areas, signal strengths, interference analysis, network performance, equipment compatibility, security measures, and regulatory compliance.
The CEO of the MEIDECC, Sione Akauola, said, “The opportunity to conduct thorough testing on the 5G spectrum prior to full commercial deployment is instrumental in ensuring a seamless transition to this advanced technology. By evaluating critical technical parameters during this phase, we aim to address any potential challenges proactively and guarantee a robust infrastructure for future operations.”
The local network operators will be awarded 5G full licenses depending on this testing exercise.
While Tonga moves towards integrating 5G technology into its every day life, the impact it will have on our society is yet to be revealed.
