A tragic incident at Tapuhia Landfill in Vaini on Tuesday this week resulted in the death of a 32-year-old man from Ngele’ia. The victim was operating a heavy machinery loader when the machinery overturned, trapping him underneath. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, rescuing the man and transporting him to Vaiola Hospital. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to severe internal injuries and fractures shortly after arrival. A master Tongan tapa mat maker, Tui Emma Gillies, is concerned with the common trend of traditional Tongan tapa mat makers using plastic in making ngatu (Tongan tapa mat).
